About

The Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) was founded in 2002 with the view of training and supporting the scientists and intellectuals who are expected to suggest encompassing solutions for the problems that have been taking place for over two centuries. ILEM’s main objectives are to conduct scientific research on suggesting solutions for humanity’s questions by laying the groundwork for training scientists who preserve the scientific tradition. ILEM hopes its scientific studies will inspire various groups in Turkey and abroad.

ILEM Istanbul Talks is a new program series initiated by the Scientific Studies Association (ILEM). It aims to host well-known scholars from different countries and academic disciplines to talk about a certain issue on a monthly basis. In this talk, Richard W. Bulliet (Speaker) and Faruk Yaslıçimen (Moderator) will discuss the role of the camel caravans in transportation in the early Islamic history.

It is known that economic history has a concentration on “mode of production” to understand the historical transformations in the economy. However, it neglects the developments in transportation and its role in structuring economic history. Richard W. Bulliet concentrates on the “mode of transportation” with a specific focus on early Islamic history. Bringing the camel caravans at the center of the discussion, Bulliet ve Yaslıçimen will discuss how camels as a “mode of transportation” were neglected in historiography and can helps us in understanding the dynamics of socio-economic activities in the early Islamic history.
