Barzakh Before and Beyond Hegel

We are excited to announce that we continue face-to-face ILEM Istanbul Talks with two doyen scholars Bruce Lawrence and miriam cooke! We will host them at Ilem Terrace Hall with their speeches about “Barzakh Before and Beyond Hegel.”  

Barzakh Before and Beyond Hegel

Unlike Hegel’s thesis/ antithesis/ synthesis, barzakh provides a radically different way of dealing with contradictions. Instead of stopping thought, it provides an agonistic approach where there can be a dynamic interaction of opposites without collapse or elimination of one into the other. With both Qur’anic and contemporary examples, they will demonstrate how barzakh functions as a) physical/ metaphysical template, b) metaphor and method, and c) theoretical model. Then, they will offer four applications as

• Tribal Modern—physical
• Tawajud/wajd/wujud—metaphysical wajd as a metaphorical architecture of a hall of mirrors mise-en-abime
• Ardalan Shams mausoleum project
• Ottoman gardens of Tulip Period

Bruce Lawrance

Born in New Jersey in 1941, Bruce Lawrence earned his undergraduate degree at Princeton University, his master's degree at Episcopal Theological School, and his doctorate at Yale University in History of Religions. Currently, he works as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Religion at Duke University and Alliance of Civilizations Institute (MEDİT) at Ibn Haldun University. Beginning to learn Arabic from age 17, Lawrence has been conducting research on Islamic history from that day to the present. He explored the civilizations established by Muslims, especially in the areas of South Asia and the Middle East. He has also worked on other religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism in Asia. He has many prominent works including The Qur'an: A Biography (Books That Changed the World) (2008), Islamicate Cosmopolitan Spirit (Wiley-Blackwell Manifestos), (2021), The Bruce B. Lawrence Reader: Islam beyond Borders (2021).

miriam cooke

miriam cooke was born in Colorado, in 1948. She received an MA degree from the University of Edinburgh and completed her PhD in St. Antony's College, Oxford in 1980.  She is a professor of modern Arabic literature and culture at Duke University since 1993 and previously has been a visiting professor at institutions all over the world, including the University of Bucharest, Tunis I University, and the University of Cape Town and and Alliance of Civilizations Institute (MEDİT) at Ibn Haldun University. The majority of cooke's books are analyses of the works of female Arabic-language writers, especially those writers who address the wars that have been such a prominent part of the postcolonial Arabic world. Some of her publications include Women and the War Story (1996), Women Claim Islam: Creating Islamic Feminism through Literature (2001) and Dissident Syria: Making Oppositional Arts Official (2007).

Muhammed İkbal Bakır

Muhammet İkbal Bakır was born in Erzurum in 1981. After completing his undergraduate in the Department of Political Science at Boğaziçi University, he received his masters and doctorate degrees in Philosophy at Galatasaray University. Currently, he teaches various courses such as Introduction to Modern Thought, Hegel, Heidegger, and German Idealism as a doctoral faculty member in the Philosophy Department of Ibn Haldun University.

ILEM Istanbul Talks’un on birinci serisinde Bruce Lawrence ve miriam cooke’u ağırlayacağımız için heyecanlıyız! Bu oturumda konuklarımız “Hegel'den Önce ve Hegel’in Ötesinde Berzah” başlıklı bir konuşma yapacaklar. İlem Teras Salonunda gerçekleşecek olan programa müsait olan herkesi bekleriz.

Hegel'den Önce ve Hegel’in Ötesinde Berzah

Hegel'in tez/antitez/sentezinden farklı olarak, berzah çelişkilerle başa çıkmak için çok daha farklı bir yol sunar. Düşünceyi durdurmak yerine, karşıtlıkların birbirinin içine çökmesi veya birbirini yok etmesi olmaksızın daha dinamik bir etkileşiminin var olduğu agonistik bir yaklaşım sağlar. Konuşmacılarımız hem Kur’an’dan hem de çağdaş örneklerle berzahın a) fiziksel/metafizik şablon, b) mecaz ve yöntem ve c) teorik model olarak nasıl bir işlev gördüğünü anlatacaklar. Ardından, dört farklı döneme ait uygulamalar sunacaklar. 

Bruce Lawrence

miriam cooke
